Mojo Monday - Sandcastles

Welcome to another Mojo Monday, today I thought we could all think back to our childhood where when we were on holiday at the beach. I don't know about you but I used to love making sandcastles. Collecting all the shells and the drift wood and decorating the castle, building a moat around the bottom and racing to the sea and back trying to fill it with water - and not understanding why it never stayed there and kept disappearing! Then just as your about finished your little brother would come and jump all over it!

WIKIPEDIA

Sand art is the practice of modelling sand into an artistic form, such as a sand brushing, sand sculpture, sandpainting, or sand bottles. A sand castle is a type of sand sculpture resembling a miniature building, often a castle.
The two basic building ingredients, sand and water, are available in abundance on a sandy beach, so most sand play takes place there, or in a sandpit. Tidal beaches generally have sand that limits height and structure because of the shape of the sand grains. Good sand sculpture sand is somewhat dirty, having silt and clay that helps lock the irregular shaped sand grains together.
Sand castles are typically made by children, simply for the fun of it, but there are also sand sculpture contests for adults that involve large, complex constructions. The largest Sandcastle made in a contest was 18 ft. tall, the owner, Ronald Malcnujio, a 5 ft. high man, had to use several ladders, each the height of the sand castle. His sculpture consisted of 1 ton of sand and 10 litres of water, to sculpt.
Ukrainian talent contest winner, Kseniya Simonova, gained worldwide fame and became an online phenomenon with her sand painting which depicted World War II and how her family had been separated by the war.

Sandcastle

Author Unknown
From the beach its sandy walls rise,
Its turrents reach up to touch the skies.
A tiny moat dissolves the keep.
Its pavers are strong, though only two inches deep.
Tiny footprints embedded in the sand,
Where once a child there did stand.
Its grace and beauty a short time will last,
Before the sea washes it into the past.

I hope that has brought back a few memories for you today :0)

Mojo Monday - Oylmpics

Welcome to another Mojo Monday. Now its not to long until the Olympics starts and I don't know about you but I'm a little excited. My brother was lucky enough to actually work at the Olympic Village so I guess seeing it on the TV makes me feel really proud. But its seeing the dedication that the athlete's, the support staff and all the people who are helping to make this such a once in a lifetime experience that really feels me with pride.

Are you all looking forward to it? Which events will you be watching? Do you know the history of the Olympics?

The Olympic Games (French: les Jeux olympiques, JO),[1] is a major international event featuring summer and winter sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered to be the world’s foremost sports competition and more than 200 nations participate.[2] The Games are currently held biennially, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, meaning they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.
The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teenage athletes. The IOC has had to adapt to the varying economic, political, and technological realities of the 20th century. As a result, the Olympics shifted away from pure amateurism, as envisioned by Coubertin, to allow participation of professional athletes. The growing importance of the mass media created the issue of corporate sponsorship and commercialization of the Games. World Wars led to the cancellation of the 1916, 1940, and 1944 Games. Large boycotts during the Cold War limited participation in the 1980 and 1984 Games.
The Olympic Movement consists of international sports federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and organizing committees for each specific Olympic Games. As the decision-making body, the IOC is responsible for choosing the host city for each Olympic Games. The host city is responsible for organizing and funding a celebration of the Games consistent with the Olympic Charter. The Olympic program, consisting of the sports to be contested at the Games, is also determined by the IOC. The celebration of the Games encompasses many rituals and symbols, such as the Olympic flag and torch, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. Over 13,000 athletes compete at the Summer and Winter Olympics in 33 different sports and nearly 400 events. The first, second, and third place finishers in each event receive Olympic medals: gold, silver, and bronze, respectively.
The Games have grown in scale to the point that nearly every nation is represented. Such growth has created numerous challenges, including boycotts, doping, bribery, and terrorism. Every two years, the Olympics and its media exposure provide unknown athletes with the chance to attain national, and in some cases, international fame. The Games also constitute a major opportunity for the host city and country to showcase themselves to the world.

SAYINGS

“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”
- Pierre de Coubertin (primarily responsible for the revival of the Olympic Games in 1894)
"All I've done is run fast. I don't see why people should make much fuss about that."
- Fanny Blankers-Koen (Dutch sprinter who won four gold medals at the 1948 Summer Olympics)
"The Olympic Games were created for the exhaltation of the individual athlete."
- Pierre de Coubertin

I hope this has inspired you a little :0)

Fairy Tale Friday

We have been so busy stuffing our faces with delectably tasty food all week, (before Gayle came back off her holidays today and put us all back on the Haggis diet again), that we have all gained a bit of weight.
Tammy can still just about slip into her rubber dresses, but has so many bulges that she looks like a balloon that's been filled with a sack of potatoes. Claire is adamant that whoever did the washing last, had the washing machine on too high a temperature setting and has shrunk all her twin sets, as she can no longer squeeze herself into them!
Jill and Maritha have taken up Zabbaha, (which is a zumba like exercise, but done to Abba and A-ha tunes), to try and burn some calories, Kirsty-Anne, Hazel, Wendy, Vicky, Louise and Trine have been busily wrapping each other up in Clingfilm (plastic wrap) and then running up and down the stairs a million times a day to try and sweat out the fat, and Debbie, Karen, Nicole, Renee and Sonia, decided to go on a liquid only diet for a few days, unfortunately the liquid just happened to be Turnip Tequila, so they have spent most of their time passed out in a drunken stupor (which has certainly stopped them from eating LOL!).

Luckily, some of us decided the best way to stop thinking about food was to take our minds off it by doing some card making instead, so at least we have a few creations to show you.

OLYMPICS

“For too long the world has failed to recognise that the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement are about fine athletics and fine art.” Avery Brundage

“It is the inspiration of the Olympic Games that drives people not only to compete but to improve, and to bring lasting spiritual and moral benefits to the athlete and inspiration to those lucky enough to witness the athletic dedication.” Herb Elliott

“The six colours, including the white background, represent the colours of all the world's flags... this is a true international emblem.” Pierre de Coubertin

Curling is not a sport. I called my grandmother and told her she could win a gold medal because they have dusting in the Olympics now.

Peggy Fleming (American figure skater, 1968 Winter Olympics)

I swam my brains out.

Sebastian Coe (2-time winner at the Olympics, after losing the 800m final in 1980)
To anyone who has started out on a long campaign believing that the gold medal was destined for him, the feeling when, all of a sudden, the medal has gone somewhere else is quite indescribable.

These distant viewers will see athletes skipping untroubled through a deserted and well-staffed Heathrow. They will see reports of trains running smoothly, of red buses speeding along unclogged roads, and of restaurants, bars, parks and museums with plenty of room to spare.
